Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

An internet resource's unique address is known as a uniform resource locator. It is one of the main methods by which browsers get published resources, like HTML pages, CSS documents, photos, and so forth.

Another name for uniform resource location is the web address or internet address. Tim Berners Lee is the developer of it. A uniform resource locator, or URL, is an address that may be typed into the address bar of a web browser to access specific resources. URL is composed of multiple distinct parts, each separated by a forward slash.

Syntax: Server name://domain name. domain. extension. host Path

Example

http://www.geekshelp.com

Types of URL

There are two types of URL

  • Absolute URL
  • Relative URL

1. Absolute URL

A resource's whole location is contained in an absolute URL. Using an absolute URL as a starting point, a relative URL finds a resource. The combination of the absolute and relative URLs yields the "complete URL" of the target.

The format of an absolute URL is as follows:

scheme://server/path/resource

Usually, a relative URL does not include a scheme or server; it just contains the path and, if desired, the resource. The components that make up the entire URL format are defined in the following tables.

Scheme

Describes the intended method of accessing the resource.

Server

Gives the name of the machine that the resource is stored on.

Path

Gives the directory order that leads to the destination. The target is the last directory in the path if the resource is omitted.

Resource

Resource, if present, is the destination and usually refers to a file name. It could be as simple as a single binary stream of bytes or as complex as a structured document with many storages and binary streams of bytes.

2. Relative

A URL that just contains the path is called a relative URL. Everything that appears after the domain, such as the directory and slug, is referred to as the path.

Relative URLs are interpreted to utilize the same protocol, subdomain, and domain as the page they are on because they do not contain the complete URL structure.

This is an illustration of a relative URL:

<a href=“http://www.example.com/category/topic.html”>anchor text</a>
