Data Communication

Data communication is the process of moving information between two or more systems, devices, or locations over a transmission medium. This data transmission is essential to modern computing and telecommunications, enabling a wide range of applications such as video chat, email, the Internet, and many more.


Data Communication Components

Communication is a key factor in the flow of data between sender and recipient. During communication, the following components are used:

  • Sender
  • Receiver
  • Message
  • Medium
  • Protocol


1. Sender

The sender is the individual, computer, or other device that transmits the data to the recipient of the communication. The person who is transmitting the data is the sender.


2. Receiver

The person who receives the data from the opposite end or section is known as the receiver. Following receipt of the communication, the recipient will reply or acknowledge what has been sent.


3. Message

Any information meant to be communicated from one individual to another is called a message. It might be an audio file, video file, text file, etc.


4. Medium

Two or more workstations are connected by a communication channel. Both cable and wireless media can be used to connect workstations.


5. Protocol

Data should be comprehensible to the recipient as well as sent by the sender; otherwise, it is useless. Rohiniher sends Chetan a message, for instance. It's a pointless conversation if Sonali writes in Hindi and Chetan doesn't comprehend it.


Types of Data Communication Model

  • Simplex
  • Half Duplex
  • Full Duplex


1. Simplex Model

It is unidirectional communication, or one-way communication, in which two devices employ their full transmission capability while one device only sends and receives data.

For instance, utilizing a speaker to listen to music, a keyboard to enter data, or the Internet of Things.

2. Half Duplex Model

Both devices are capable of sending and receiving data, but not simultaneously, making it a two-way or bidirectional communication. One device is only receiving data while the other is transmitting it, and vice versa.

3. Full Duplex Model

This type of communication is two-way, or maybe more accurately, bidirectional, meaning that both devices can transmit and receive data simultaneously.
